Diagnosing tinnitus is fairly simple, but treating it can be confusing for many tinnitus sufferers. As with most health issues, there are two ways to treat tinnitus: traditional medicine and homeopathic remedies. In this article I address both types of treatments, as well as how to take advantage of what both the medical and homeopathic camps have to offer as you work to reduce or eliminate your tinnitus symptoms.

First, be sure to get a checkup with your physician to confirm that you have tinnitus. Once you verify that you have tinnitus your physician can help you identify one or more causes of your tinnitus. This is important as tinnitus has several potential causes and co-factors and if you narrow down the cause of your tinnitus you can discuss targeted treatment options.

Medical Tinnitus Remedies:

One in five Americans suffer from tinnitus symptoms at some point in their lives, with about 12 million people seeking help for it each year! The good news is that although bothersome, medical professionals advise that in most cases tinnitus isn’t a sign of something serious, and for most people, it gets better by treating the underlying cause or causes.

1. Get a check-up with your doctor to be sure you have tinnitus. However, you’ll want to be referred by your physician to an ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT), who can also help you with the important next step of finding what caused your tinnitus.

2. Find out what caused your tinnitus. The ENT specialist uses a variety of tests to narrow down the causes of your tinnitus, since there is neither a single cause for this disorder, nor a single for treatment for it either.

Treatments and Remedies for tinnitus:

Once you have a diagnosis and some probable causes identified you can look into the treatment options. There are two general categories of causes of tinnitus, and treatments are different for each of these causes. An overview is outlined below, and you can check out our article on Tips for Finding the Best Tinnitus Treatment for more details.

A. Using the medical approach. Medical problems like Swimmer’s Ear can be treated easily and your tinnitus will probably disappear at the same time.

B. Tinnitus caused by lifestyle-related problems. Taking the holistic approach is often best for treating lifestyle-related tinnitus symptoms. Holistic solutions include:

Acupuncture

Vitamin and mineral therapy

Herbal supplements

Laser therapy

Tinnitus retraining therapy (retraining the brain)

Using electronic devices, MP3 players and more

Ear candling

Hypnotherapy or biofeedback

While it requires patience, taking a homeopathic or holistic approach to treating your tinnitus may be one of the best options available right now and for many tinnitus sufferers, it is the only approach that will alleviate their tinnitus.

If you are in pain from the debilitating symptoms of tinnitus and looking for fast tinnitus relief, you’re looking for answers that will help you get back to feeling better right away. And since you may already know that no single pill or treatment is known to offer immediate and permanent relief from tinnitus, you would be justified in feeling stressed and overwhelmed. What can you do to get tinnitus relief? Here are the 5 steps you can take to get relief from your tinnitus symptoms:

Step 1 for Tinnitus Relief:

Read up on tinnitus, to educate yourself more on the following steps, as well as to familiarize yourself with well-known tinnitus remedies. There are many excellent publications available on this topic.

Step 2 for Tinnitus Relief:

Get a check-up with your primary care physician to be sure you have tinnitus. You may think you have tinnitus if you’re hearing ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping, whistling or other sounds in your ears. However, your doctor may uncover a simple to cure situation such as Swimmer’s Ear or wax buildup that’s either causing or contributing to your tinnitus. If so, an antibiotic or wax removal treatment could help you right away!

Step 3 for Tinnitus Relief:

See an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT) and begin medical treatment if appropriate. Your doctor may not find anything and will then send you to an ENT, as they may be able to uncover a less obvious medical condition, which when treated, could clear up your tinnitus as well.

Step 4 for Tinnitus Relief:

Locate and make an appointment with a holistic or homeopathic doctor. Even when medical professionals are able to help you with tinnitus, there are often contributing lifestyle factors such as food allergies or smoking that trigger tinnitus symptoms.

Homeopathic professionals include chiropractors, naturopaths, acupuncturists, nutrionists, to name a few. Try and find a full service center, where you can be referred to the specialist you need once your condition has been assessed.

Step 5 for Tinnitus Relief:

Begin holistic treatment, if appropriate. Here are some holistic remedies that have had a high success rate in providing tinnitus sufferers some immediate relief:

Two top treatments that can lessen your symptoms quickly:

Acupuncture and acupressure

Chiropractic treatment

Other holistic treatments:

Note: Ask about discontinuing any aspirin or other NSAIDs

Vitamin or Mineral therapy

Herbal remedies

White Noise therapy or Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

Change in diet, elimination of food allergies

Hypnotherapy and other therapies, which may also help with smoking cessation

With the help of the homeopathic professional, chances are you can begin to find tinnitus relief within a few days. Plus, natural tinnitus treatments work well in treating disabling symptoms without causing harsh side effects like some, more traditional medical treatments may.

As you get your symptoms under control you can take your time in identifying more permanent remedies for your tinnitus, and you’ll be able to breathe a little easier while doing so. Again, we recommend that you read up on tinnitus remedies first, so that you are informed when working with the medical professionals, which ultimately saves you time, money and unneeded suffering, and puts you in charge of your tinnitus and your health.

There are two types of Tinnitus: Pulsatile Tinnitus, and non-Pulsatile Tinnitus. Tinnitus Treatment for each type of tinnitus is different, so it’s important to know what type of tinnitus you have before seeking treatment.

You can usually tell Pulsatile and non-Pulsatile Tinnitus apart by the type of sounds you hear. As the name implies, pulsatile tinnitus sounds like your own heartbeat, whereas non-pulsatile tinnitus sounds like a variety of familiar noises, such as ringing, chirping, whirring or clicking.

It’s possible, although unusual, to have these two types of tinnitus together, and people who have both conditions usually say the pulsatile tinnitus component is the more irritating. The focus of this article is to gain a better understanding of pulsatile tinnitus, its causes and its treatments.

What Causes Pulsatile Tinnitus?

Pulsatile tinnitus is a rare form of tinnitus, and only about 3% of tinnitus patients have it. It is sometimes referred to as vascular tinnitus and is usually related to disturbances in the blood flow. The problem usually originates from within the blood vessels inside the head or neck region. When disturbed or irregular blood flow occurs it can result in turbulent blood flow, and this turbulence is then amplified and can be heard in the ears as a whooshing, beating or other rhythmic sound.

8 common causes of Pulsatile Tinnitus and their treatments:

Tinnitus involves the annoying sensation of hearing sound when no external sound is present. Tinnitus symptoms include these types of phantom noises in your ears:

Ringing

Whistling

Hissing

Buzzing

Roaring

Clicking

Tinnitus suffers report these phantom noises in one or both of the ears, which may vary in pitch from a low roar to a high shriek. The sounds may be barely noticeable, or so loud it interferes with the ability to concentrate or hear. Tinnitus may come and go, or be present all of the time.

Should you see a doctor about your tinnitus?

If you have tinnitus symptoms that continue past a week and that bother you, see your doctor. If you have an illness, even a cold or flu, be aware of any tinnitus symptoms and be sure to make an appointment right away, so you can avoid any complications of the ear, nose and throat. Your doctor will probably refer you to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist (ENT) for further testing, while ruling out any immediate medical concerns.

Get a Diagnosis: There are two types of tinnitus

Objective tinnitus: With this rare form of tinnitus your doctor can hear the same sounds you do when he or she does an examination. Objective Tinnitus is usually caused by an inner ear infection or an inner ear bone condition.

Subjective tinnitus: This is by far the most common type of tinnitus, where only you can hear the sounds. Its primary causes are often medial issues such as hearing loss, ear problems in your outer, middle or inner ear, or by problems with the nerves where the part of your brain that interprets nerve signals as sound. Secondary or contributing causes are usually those related to lifestyle, such as food allergies, smoking, and medications and such.

What to do about tinnitus:

Although bothersome, in most cases tinnitus isn’t a sign of something serious, and for most people, it gets better by treating the underlying cause or causes. When a total cure isn’t possible, there are effective treatments that reduce or mask the noise, making tinnitus less noticeable.

Once you get a diagnosis from your doctor and eliminate any medical causes of tinnitus, there are lots of ways you can manage and minimize your symptoms. This requires patience and being committed to uncovering any possible contributing lifestyle factors. With time and perseverance you may be able to rid yourself of your symptoms for good; traditionally it takes about 1-6 weeks to reduce symptoms, and 6 months to 2 years to eliminate them.

We believe that the more informed you are about tinnitus the greater your chances are of success in effectively managing, reducing or even eliminating your tinnitus symptoms.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) is one of the newer therapies used for treating tinnitus today. Until recently it was not widely known, nor was it accepted as a legitimate remedy. Success rates with TRT have been gaining positive attention in the media, and therefore it is gaining acceptance as a mainstream treatment for tinnitus.

Renowned neuroscientist Pawel Jastreboff created TRT, sometimes called habituation or white noise therapy, in the 1980’s. The concept is simple. When there is neither medical nor lifestyle-oriented evidence to explain the cause of a patient’s tinnitus, Jastreboff believed that the brain could be retrained to stop hearing the noise. Introducing precise sound therapy to the patient using a white noise generator does this. By slowly increasing the volume of the white noise being heard throughout the day, the brain is forced to focus on this real noise, and stop “hearing” the noises of tinnitus. Although this type of training takes some time, it has been reported to work in more than 80% of patients. The TRT either completely relieves the tinnitus, or at least lowers the noise patients hear on a regular basis due to their Tinnitus.

You may be wondering why TRT can help with tinnitus. Most neuroscientists believe that tinnitus occurs in the area of the brain where memory and stress meet, which may be the reasons why our emotions are linked to memory – including the memory of sound.

The key here is to remember that sometimes tinnitus is simply the re-running of sound memories heard previously, in an unending loop. Therefore, when the emotion linked to a certain sound is felt, the patient will hear the sound again, even if it doesn’t exist at the moment. By breaking the emotional tie of tinnitus, the sufferer can stop the noise altogether.

Holistic practitioners today offer other similar forms of therapy such as hypnotherapy and regression therapy. Like TRT, these therapies address the link between emotion and hearing, and the goal is to uncover any trauma that may have caused the link between a sound or set of sounds, and emotion stored in the brain. Hypnotherapy and regression therapy is a great approach because it often produces results pretty quickly, sometimes in a few sessions.

Taking a homeopathic or holistic approach to treating your Tinnitus with therapies like these may be one of the best options available right now. Natural tinnitus treatments work well in treating disabling symptoms without causing harsh side effects like some, more traditional treatments may.

We recommend that you read up on tinnitus remedies so that you are informed when working with these holistic professionals, which helps you be more proactive in your healing.

If you’re reading this article you likely have a better understanding of tinnitus than most people, then again most people haven’t even heard the term tinnitus. Even those who are familiar with tinnitus are bombarded with myths and misinformation. I wanted to take a minute to break down and debunk the top six myths that surround tinnitus, which is commonly misspelled as tinitis, tinitus, or tinnitis, for starters.

Separating Tinnitus Truth From Myth:

1. Myth: Tinnitus is a disease.

Truth: According to Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of disease is, “The condition of the living animal or plant body or of one of its parts that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms.”

While by definition tinnitus could be called a disease, it’s important to note that it really is more of a condition or symptoms of an underlying problem. The reason it’s important to distinguish tinnitus this way, is that unlike some diseases, your tinnitus could be resulting from something as simple as Swimmer’s Ear. Even if it were something more complex such as a combination of hearing damage and food allergies the point is that if the root cause is found, there is a good chance of improving and potentially even eliminating your tinnitus symptoms.

2. Myth: Tinnitus is a symptom of a serious illness.

Truth: While tinnitus has a range of about 15 possible causes, this is largely not the case. If you experience symptoms of tinnitus it’s very important to get a checkup, since your doctor can refer you to an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT), who can confirm tinnitus for you, and help you narrow down its possible causes.

3. Myth: Tinnitus will make you crazy.

Truth: People experiencing moderate or severe tinnitus over a long period of time have understandably been known to suffer emotional distress, and as a result, may seek help from a therapist, especially if long-term, constant ringing, buzzing, whirring or chirping is present and the patient is unable to stop the noise.

One reason this myth exists is that the noises are actually in the brain, being played like a loop on a tape, but are not originating from the ears. Still, this does not mean the person is crazy, since all hearing occurs in the brain anyway. White noise, hypnotherapy and regression therapy can often help in this situation.

4. Myth: Having tinnitus means you are going deaf, or it is causing you to go deaf.

Truth: About 90% of people who have tinnitus do have some level of hearing damage. Also, although tinnitus can be a symptom of hearing loss, many people with tinnitus have normal hearing – just as many people with hearing loss don’t have tinnitus. In any case having tinnitus does not mean you’re going deaf. An ENT specialist or audiologist can help clear up any questions on this for you.

5. Myth: Tinnitus usually disappears by itself.

Truth: This depends on the potential hearing damage you have. Since hearing damage is often the primary cause of tinnitus, if you have ringing in the ears due to short-term noise exposure – for example, after going to firing range – it might go away within a week.

However, if you have symptoms that last for longer than a few weeks or months, there is a strong possibility that your tinnitus may be long-term. In this case it is wise to schedule your exam with your physician.

6. Myth: There is no cure for tinnitus.

Truth: Unfortunately, there is currently no drug that can make tinnitus go away. Even surgery has a mixed success rate at curing tinnitus, since tinnitus is usually a symptom of something else that needs healing in the body.

That said, there are lots of ways you can manage and minimize your tinnitus symptoms, and if you are committed to uncovering all possible causes, you may be able to rid yourself of tinnitus for good. Traditionally it takes about 1-6 weeks to reduce symptoms, and 6 months to 2 years to eliminate them depending on what your specific underlying causes are, and how they respond to treatment.

We believe that the more informed you are about tinnitus, the greater your chances are of success in effectively managing, reducing or even eliminating it. We have researched, read and reviewed the top home tinnitus treatments to save you time and assist you in selecting a product that will enhance your chances of success.

One in five Americans suffer from tinnitus symptoms at some point in their lives, with about 12 million people seeking help for it each year! So what can you do about tinnitus, and what are the top tinnitus remedies? Experts agree that before you look at the known remedies, you want to be sure and get a proper diagnosis, since your doctor can assist you in uncovering the cause or causes of your tinnitus. Once your diagnosis is confirmed, you can take some steps as outlined in this article to help you find the best treatment plan that will assist you in feeling better again soon.

Step 1 – Get a check-up with your doctor to be sure you have tinnitus. Even though you may be pretty sure you have it, the doctor can also help you in eliminating any obvious medical causes for your tinnitus, which may be treatable immediately. Once you get a check-up with your primary care physician, you should also be referred to an ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT), for further evaluation.

Step 2 – Find out what caused your tinnitus. The ENT specialist uses a variety of tests to narrow down the causes of your tinnitus, since there is neither a single cause for this disorder, nor a single treatment for it either.

Treatments and Remedies for tinnitus:
Once you have a diagnosis and your doctor has helped you narrowed in on one or more possible causes of your tinnitus, you can review and discuss the treatment options. There are two general categories of causes of tinnitus: Medical and Lifestyle-related. Treatments are different for each of these causes, and everyone’s situation is unique.

A. The medical approach- for tinnitus caused by medical problems: If you have an underlying medical problem such as Swimmer’s Ear, for example, then you’re in luck since you can seek traditional medical treatment. Medical problems like Swimmer’s Ear can be treated easily and your tinnitus may disappear at the same time.

B. The holistic approach- for tinnitus caused by lifestyle-related problems. Some people have tinnitus that requires both medical and holistic treatment, while others require holistic treatment only. The holistic approach is often called the homeopathic or natural remedies. A variety of tinnitus remedies are available so that you can help your body heal itself and therefore reduce or eliminate your symptoms.

Tinnitus Remedies:

Acupuncture

Vitamin and mineral therapy

Herbal supplements

Laser therapy

Tinnitus retraining therapy (retraining the brain)

Using electronic devices, MP3 players and more

Ear candling

Hypnotherapy or biofeedback

While it requires patience, taking a holistic approach to treating your tinnitus may be one of the best options available right now. For many tinnitus sufferers, it is the only approach that will alleviate their tinnitus, since their symptoms aren’t caused by a medical issue, or medical treatment alone was not enough to cure the tinnitus.

While a simple cure for tinnitus isn’t available, the tinnitus treatments highlighted here could help you improve, reduce or potentially eliminate your symptoms. So that you are fully aware of the tinnitus remedies available, we recommend that you read our reviews. We do the homework for you- to help you can decide which product will best suit your unique needs. For the most in-depth background on tinnitus, you might want to consider Tinnitus Miracle, our number one recommended tinnitus E-book.

If you regularly experience the painful symptoms of tinnitus, you’re looking for answers that will end your suffering and help you get back to feeling like your former self again. We’ll outline some basic steps for finding the best tinnitus treatment.

1. Get a check-up with your doctor to be sure you have tinnitus. It sounds obvious, since if you experience the sensation of hearing ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping, whistling or other sounds in the ears, chances are you have it.

There are two general categories of causes of tinnitus, and treatments are different for each of these causes- those caused by medical problems, and those caused by lifestyle-related (non-medical) causes, and these can sometimes overlap.

A. Tinnitus caused by medical problems: If you have an underlying medical problem such as Swimmer’s Ear, for example, then you’re in luck since your doctor can help you with the traditional medical approach.

Using the medical approach. Medical problems like Swimmer’s Ear can be treated easily and your tinnitus will probably disappear at the same time.

It’s important to note that research shows that most tinnitus sufferers have damage to the ear, which is obviously medical, but may not be repairable. In these cases relief can often been achieved by looking for additional influencers in your lifestyle, which caused your tinnitus to appear where they wouldn’t otherwise do so with hearing damage alone.

B. Tinnitus caused by lifestyle-related problems: People fall into two categories here. The first group is people who have hearing damage as noted above and are looking for additional lifestyle issues to remedy the situation. The second group is those who don’t have a medical condition, so it has been determined that their symptoms are caused by something in their lifestyle such as food allergies, smoking or many other possibilities.

In either case the problem in the lifestyle must be identified and then treated with the appropriate natural or holistic approach that allows the body to heal itself and the symptoms usually disappear. (See our article that talks about the causes of tinnitus.)

Taking the holistic approach is often best for treating tinnitus caused by your lifestyle. Once any medical causes of tinnitus have been handled, or if you didn’t have a medical cause, you want to focus on the natural remedies available for curing tinnitus. The goal here is to help the body heal itself by taking care of whatever lifestyle issue is causing the problem.

Homeopathic (natural, holistic) treatment options:

Acupuncture

Vitamin and mineral therapy

Herbal supplements

Laser therapy

Tinnitus retraining therapy (retraining the brain)

Using electronic devices, MP3 players and more

Ear candling

Hypnotherapy or biofeedback

While it requires patience, taking a natural or holistic approach to treating your tinnitus may be one of the best options available right now. For many tinnitus sufferers, it is the only approach that will cure their tinnitus!

Natural tinnitus treatments work well in treating disabling symptoms without causing harsh side effects like some, more traditional treatments may. The reason is simple, homeopathic approaches rely on allowing the body to fix itself. That doesn’t mean doing nothing. What it does mean is trying to find out what is triggering your Tinnitus and treating that, not the noise itself as traditional drug therapy does.

Whatever you decide is the best tinnitus treatment for your unique needs, we recommend that you read up on tinnitus so that you are in charge of your health and you can find a cure for the dreaded “ringing in the ears”. Being informed saves you time, money and unneeded suffering because you are making more informed choices.

If you regularly experience a ringing in your ears, is that tinnitus? The answer is probably yes. Many people suffer from ringing, buzzing or whistling sounds in the ears, and aren’t sure if they have this debilitating condition. They are equally concerned about how they can get rid of it since it usually erodes the quality of life. Let’s look at the definition of tinnitus, how you can be sure you have it, and steps for eliminating it.

WebMD.com describes tinnitus as “the sensation of hearing ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping, whistling or other sounds in the ears. The noise can be intermittent or continuous, and can vary in loudness. It is often worse when background noise is low, so you may be most aware of it at night when you’re trying to fall asleep in a quiet room. In rare cases, the sound beats in sync with your heart.”

Experts agree that tinnitus is not a disease; rather it is a disorder, or symptom where the body is trying to alert us to a deeper problem. It might comfort you to know that tinnitus is very common, affecting an estimated 50 million adults in the United. While a large number of cases are mild or only occur occasionally, about 12 million people seek medical help for severe, chronic tinnitus every year.

So if I have tinnitus, now what? Since you probably have tinnitus, the next logical question is what to do about it. Well before we go there, it is important to get a proper diagnosis, since your tinnitus may be a symptom of an underlying medical condition such as Swimmer’s Ear or Meniere’s disease. If so, you could be treated quickly and take care of your tinnitus problem at the same time.

In other instances tinnitus may be caused by a variety of lifestyle-oriented issues, which we’ll discuss in a moment. In either case, you need to be diagnosed by a medical specialist such as an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, who can then help you with selecting treatment. If you are in a PPO be sure to see your general practitioner first and ask him or her for a referral to the specialist.

When you go to the ENT specialist you should expect the following:

An in-depth interview and family health history

A complete physical exam

A thorough exam of the ears, nose and throat

A detailed set of hearing tests

A series of tests for tinnitus

Diagnostics tests such as X-Rays, tinnitus pitch and loudness tests

Once the tests are complete the specialist will confirm whether you have tinnitus which is highly probable. Equally important, he will let you know if it was caused by any underlying medical issue. For example, if you have Swimmer’s Ear, you may be given antibiotics, your condition should clear up quickly, and your temporary tinnitus disappears!

In the event that you are diagnosed with tinnitus that has no obvious medical causes, your doctor may try to identify potential lifestyle causes, such as food allergies, stress or reactions to medications. If the doctor has a holistic approach, he may help you figure out the cause or causes, and to offer homeopathic remedies such as herbs, vitamins, stress reduction and such.

The challenge here is that much of the time tinnitus is caused by a couple of lifestyle factors, and traditional medical professionals simply don’t have the time to help you narrow down your particular causes. While they are excellent for diagnosing conditions, unfortunately, once a diagnosis is made that’s where they end up prescribing treatments that may not best serve you. One such popular treatment is surgery, which often only brings temporary relief. Drugs are another popular option, which have a long list of side effects and sometimes only make the tinnitus worse. Many times, left with no other options your doctor may simply advise you that you will have to live with your symptoms.

These limiting options can be devastating. If you or someone you know suffers with tinnitus you know how difficult and painful it is, and how it can be destructive to the quality of your life! More than just ringing in the ears, tinnitus can often cause non-stop noises in the head, bringing sufferers to the brink of insanity and even destroying family and business relationships. This is not something you want to live with on a long term basis! A good alternative here is to partner with a naturopathic or holistic professional to help you in finding a cure for your tinnitus, or you can simply commit to finding your own natural remedies by following one of the excellent tinnitus remedy guides available.

What are tinnitus causes, and what can I do about it? Many people are looking for the answer to these puzzling and important questions since tinnitus is a painful disorder that often erodes the quality of life for sufferers, sometimes even disrupting their careers or their relationships! This article attempts to simplify the possible tinnitus causes to help you take steps to feel better as soon as possible.

So here’s what we know. Experts agree that there are many possible medical and lifestyle causes of tinnitus. Unfortunately it gets really confusing because the causes are not all the same for all sufferers, and often a person’s condition can be brought about by 2 or more causes! Even well-intentioned health care providers have difficulty prescribing a clear path for treatment.

Fortunately, there is good news. If you follow some simple steps you have excellent chances of reducing or eliminating your tinnitus completely. The first step is to learn as much as you can about the possible causes so you can take charge of your health. We’ll discuss the steps for treatment in other articles.

What are the Most Common Tinnitus Causes?

1. The primary Tinnitus Causes are prolonged exposure to loud sounds. Up to 90% of people with tinnitus have some level of noise-induced hearing loss, with smaller percentage of hearing loss attributed to the natural aging process. Noise causes permanent damage to the sound-sensitive cells of the cochlea, a spiral-shaped organ in the inner ear. Carpenters, pilots, rock musicians and street-repair workers are among those whose jobs put them at risk, as are people who work with chain saws, guns or other loud devices or who repeatedly listen to loud music. On rare occasions, a single exposure to a sudden extremely loud noise can also cause tinnitus.

One important point regarding hearing damage is that while tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss, it does not cause the loss, nor does a hearing loss cause tinnitus. In fact, some people with tinnitus experience no difficulty hearing, and in a few cases they even become so acutely sensitive to sound that they must take steps to muffle or mask external noises.

What are other Tinnitus Causes?

2. Secondary or contributing factors to tinnitus: With hearing damage serving as the primary cause of tinnitus, let’s look at a variety of other conditions and illnesses can serve as secondary contributors or triggers. The key is that these secondary causes usually combine with hearing damage and often create tinnitus symptoms, where it might not otherwise have surfaced.

A. Medical Contributors to Tinnitus Causes:

Blockages of the ear due to a buildup of wax

Ear infections or Meniere’s disease, which affects the inner part of the ear

A tumor of the nerve that allows us to hear (auditory nerve)

A perforated eardrum

Otosclerosis, a disease that results in stiffening of the small bones in the middle ear

Other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, anemia, and an under active thyroid gland

Neck or jaw problems, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome

B. Lifestyle (non-medical) contributors to Tinnitus Causes:

Certain drugs – most notably aspirin, antibiotics, or quinine medications can be tinnitus causes. In fact, tinnitus is cited as a potential side effect for about 200 prescription and nonprescription drugs

Diet- Including specific food allergies and/or an inflammatory diet, or a vitamin deficient diet

Certain substances- Such as alcohol, smoking and caffeinated beverages

Overall poor health and habits- Which contribute to medical conditions noted above

Stress, Anxiety and emotional disturbances

Toxins and environmental factors- Simple things like the wrong toothpaste can serve as a trigger to tinnitus attacks!

Now that you understand the causes of tinnitus can you are ready to take your first step to eliminating tinnitus- talking to a medical professional for a diagnosis. We have written an article about this topic since the visit is not a simple exam. On top of the exam, there are usually tests, a patient survey, family history and more. Being prepared for this visit with 10 minute’s worth of reading first may save you time, money or both, and providing a better outcome, as well.

Remember, there is an excellent success rate for tinnitus patients who are committed to finding both short and long-term solutions for themselves. It can take patience, but if you are open to both conventional (medical) and alternative (holistic or naturopathic) solutions you can often see some relief from your symptoms in a week or less, and potentially eliminate your condition entirely over a few months or so if you follow a plan.

We highly recommend that you read up on tinnitus, since being informed always serves you when you are making more informed choices.
